5:00pm – 5:30pm: "Duelling Illustrators"

duelling illustrators

With pen in hand, illustrators duel it out as they illustrate their response to an unpublished picture book manuscript being read aloud. This is heaps of fun for audience and participants alike.

Venue: “The Place”, Mezzanine Floor, State Library of Western Australia.

Audience: all welcome; open to the public.

Cost: this is a free event.

Participating illustrators are Beryl Semple, Richenda Goldfinch, Kelly Canby, Briony Stewart and James Foley, with a surprise guest to be announced on the day.

Our duellers will illustrate scenes from:

"The Belly-laughing Bunyip", by Elaine Forrestal

"Rattlebones", by Sian Turner

"The Naughtiest Dog on the Beach", by Dianne Wolfer

5:45pm – 7:15pm: "Behind Closed Doors – A View from the Publisher's Desk"

Presentation by Jane Godwin (Penguin Books) and Cate Sutherland (Fremantle Press)

**Please note that this event is now sold out and no more bookings can be accepted**

Join us for this opportunity to get the inside view on how publishers work. Our guests will talk about how they work, what they're buying (and what they're not) and why. In a time when everyone seems to be writing a book, how can you increase your chances of standing out in an ever-growing slush-pile?

•    Includes time for audience Q&A.

•    Wine and nibbles will be provided.

Venue:

•    Education Space, Mezzanine Floor, State Library of WA

SCBWI members attending the panel will have the opportunity to submit to Penguin Books, who are generally closed to unsolicited submissions, for a 1-month window following the meeting (please note that we are unable to extend this opportunity to non-members). Fremantle Press is always open to unsolicited submissions but you can give your submission an extra lift by getting the inside scoop on what they are looking for. Details on how to access the Penguin Books submission window will be explained at the event.

SCBWI members, please note that you must attend the event if you wish to take advantage of the submission window. We are unable to extend this opportunity to non-members.

This event will be advertised widely and capacity is limited; early bookings are recommended.

Cate Sutherland is the children's publisher at Fremantle Press. She refers to her job as ‘taking care of all children’s books for babies through to young adults’.
