First Page First Look

Panel: Clair Hume (Queensland University Press), Cate Sutherland (Fremantle Press), Author Sue Whiting and Author/Illustrator Gus Gordon

First impressions matter! When an editor or agent opens your submission, are you enticing them to turn the page or set it aside and move on? Here’s your chance to gain valuable insight into how your work comes across on that all-important first look.

During this session, our panel of industry professionals offer ‘first impression’ critiques of first pages and illustrations.

How to Submit Material for First Page First Look

All SCBWI members attending the Mainland Event are eligible to submit work for a chance to be critiqued on the day.

Further details on how to submit your work will be sent to you by email prior to the event. This will include the submission guidelines. Work which does not adhere to these guidelines will not be considered.

First Page First Look Submission Guidelines

Check out the submission guidelines for instructions on how to submit your work for consideration to be included in the First Page First Look event.
You must attend the event for your work to be eligible.

4:15 pm – 5:00 pm
Question Time

Q&A with Clair Hume (Queensland University Press), Cate Sutherland (Fremantle Press), Writer Sue Whiting and Writer/Illustrator Gus Gordon

Please have your question written before you arrive. Keep them short, sharp, to the point and no statements, please! All questions will be collected, put into a pot and drawn at random by a SCBWI West team member who will read them out.

We will do our best to get through as many questions as we can in the time allocated.

You may enter more than one question.
